You can change the appearance of any filter, apply filter presets or create your own presets for any filter from the list. From the main window you can get to Filter Editor to edit any filter or create your own, access the Filter Library to download more filters, and submit the filters you created.

This tutorial will show you how to apply a filter to an image with Filter Forge

Filter Forge Filter Editor Window

Create Your Own Filters Visually

Filter Editor is the key feature of Filter Forge, a visual node-based environment allowing users to build custom filters. Filters are assembled by connecting components into a network. Components include familiar operations like blurs, gradients, color adjustments, distortions, and blending, and less familiar such as elevation gradients or Perlin and Worley noises.

How Filter Components Work

Anatomy of a Simple Filter

The image below shows a simple two-tone technicolor filter. Without getting into too much detail, the two-tone technicolor effect consists in extracting two channels from an image, colorize them, and then blend them back again to form a new image.

Using different components you start your workflow with the original image (Image Component), perform some extractions and blends, add color controls for the filter interface, and end it with the final result (Result Component).

How Filter Interface Works

Anatomy of a Filter Interface

The image below shows how a filter is applied to an image. You load any image you like, then choose your filter from the library. Instantly the filter will be applied to your image using the default settings. To fine tune your image, you will be able to use the filter interface located in the bottom left of the window.

The many great features of Filter Forge

Standalone App

Filter Forge can work as a Photoshop plugin or a standalone application. Actually, the plugin part of Filter Forge is tiny – all it does is sending and retrieving the images. All processing is done within the main application.

Resolution Independence

All filters in Filter Forge are generated procedurally and don’t depend on external bitmaps; therefore, they are resolution-independent. You can render the same filter in any resolution without losing any detail

Seamless Tiling

Most filters in Filter Forge support seamless tiling, even for non-square textures. A simple one-click operation, Seamless Tiling works no matter whether you have downloaded the filter or created it yourself in Filter Editor

You can save the settings of any filter as a preset to recall them at any time. All filters included with Filter Forge come with factory presets that give you a glimpse of what a filter can do and provide a good starting point to explore the filter’s settings.

Online Filters Library

The Online Filter Library is a free online repository of over 12000 filters submitted by Filter Forge users. You can access the Library directly from the user interface of Filter Forge.

Filter Editor

The hands down, most important feature of Filter Forge – a visual node-based editor which lets you create your own visual effects and procedural textures.

Filters Manager

The built-in filter manager helps you organize your filter collection. You can now create an unlimited number of custom folders for user-made filters and favorites.

Lua Scripting

For advanced users! Basically, scripting allows you to implement your own components with custom inputs and internal logic. Scripts are written in Lua, a blazing-fast scripting language.

Customers Reviews

The Filter Forge Watercolor filter is so realistic that it's scary. It is soooooooo GREAT! Trust me, you definitely need to check this out.

Russell Brown

Filter Forge's amazing node based editor has been invaluable in giving us the power to create textures that make the most of today's real-time pixel shaders.

Karl Wickens

Visual Effects Lead Artist, EA Inc.

Filter Forge is the most powerful plug-in we've looked at here. That's because it's a tool for creating plug-ins, both generative texture-creation tools and effect filters.
